Переименовать файл .htaccess

друг, помоги. у меня голова уже треснет. проблема в .htaccess. установил сайт на хостинге. когда стоит htaccess.txt - показывает index.html хостера. переименовываю в .htaccess написано 500 - internal server error. рылся в нете. следовал подсказкам - ничего.
